Artist Statement :-

The work I have produced has been involved with how men and women view each other.  Training as a photographer I became involved with many projects focusing on the way people view themselves and others, influenced by Nan Goldin.  As I progressed into a practising painter and printmaker I took the figurative element of photography into a Abstract Expressionist (mark-making) style, in the vein of Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and Antonio Tapies.  Which led me onto projects as the one I have just completed based on how we fall in love with different imperfections of the opposite gender.

Using Photo etching (a process of acid biting imagery onto steel) I used closeup photographs of girls I knew.  This pictures focused on things such as dimples, hair lines and corners of lips.  Using close ups of their bodies leads the pictures to become abstracted in peoples gaze as they struggled to realise what they were viewing.  These abstract images were distorted with ink and turps to give them a more gritty appearance.  At the moment I am experimenting with these plates and producing paintings of the same images.
