Artist StatementPainting I like to leave an element of the final image up to the viewer the work is often created through an intense period of time with no allowance for mistakes, I record everything and give space to each brushstroke and mark. The essence of marks and making a mark over time is something the work is based on. I create one painting and then use it as a base for the next and the next until I feel it reaches it’s point of final execution this is often when I make an effort to reach into the maze of scratches and gestures of a figure to create the real. Ultimately the work is an instinctive reaction to the blank canvas and built up over a period of time. More conceptual work is developed through a series of drawings photographs and notes. My current work is about image and identity I am fascinated by the way in which over 100,000 people a year are having cosmetic surgery in the U.K alone. My research has led me to look into how people cope with disfigurement after an accident or an operation and reconstructive surgery. |
