Artist statement
Currently my work centres on the themes of childhood fragility and loss of innocence, drawn from my own experiences as a child and as a parent. I am particularly interested in the blocking of memory through trauma. I have been exploring these themes using both photography and oil painting. Recently, I have been combining the two to produce a series of haunting images representing the shadowy memories of childhood traumas, distorted through time. I have also been investigating the idea of “hors de champs” – the way in which images are cropped to create the suggestion of ‘something else’ outside the frame of view. Sometimes it is that hint of another presence which can often be more disturbing than that which is shown.
