Artist Statement: Created by applying acrylic paint to a back-lit glass plate, these images are inspired by aerial photographs of coral reefs and the impact that man’s activities is having on these delicate eco-systems. Applying paint to the glass produces the impression of movement and life and allows a brief period for the vibrant colours to be captured before they deteriorate irreversibly. The heat from the light causes the water and paint to dry up, crack and disintegrate so the process of creation destroying itself. The moment is gone and cannot be recaptured, leaving only the photograph as evidence of its existence. Eco-systems such as coral reefs are increasingly under pressure from the effects of man, reducing in scale and, in the most serious of cases, disappearing totally. Without agreement and concerted action to reverse this alarming trend, all that remains of their existence will be the photographic archive. |
