Artist Statement: Despite working in one of the oldest and most traditional of materials, my work is very much about the here and now. The inspiration for my work often comes from events and incidents that are going on, and changing around me; events followed by a nation daily in the papers. It is this ‘throw-away aspect of the ‘Big Scoop’ which most interests me. My pieces could be called ‘fad’ artefacts, reflecting the same throw-away nature; objects likely to be found in the doorway of a ‘Mister Pound’. Remaking these objects in clay, changes their emphasis with the change in material; light plastic objects made heavy, solid and more imposing. The kitsch is taken out of context and the decoration is used to pose far more serious questions; a cutesy, happy childhood world, hit with a dash of realism. Working with multiples allows freedom to manipulate ideas; to make each individual piece unique but create a ‘group’ piece that expresses a whole theme, not just part of a theme, as only a single piece may have been capable of suggesting.
