Statement:
I work both in London and the ancient city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. I find the space between the more frenetic post-modern atmosphere of London and the romantic traditional approach in Bulgaria allows me a more balanced approach to my studio work. These paintings are made in two sittings; the first sitting involves an expressionistic approach to first create the image. At this point I work quickly to reduce the chance of deliberate conceptual elements being introduced to the paintings. The second sitting involves a period of hours or days, when I encourage a fully conscious interpretation of the image to form. When I discover what this image means, only then do I apply the text.
