Artist Statement:

“Humans are a fragment of nature, and nature is a figment of humanity.”

Landscape art has grown with industrialisation, the further we move in to the heart of the city, the more of the country’s natural splendour is unveiled. The more developed as a society we become, the more sophisticated the discourse and techniques surrounding the genera becomes. Non-more so is this true than with the medium of photography.

With a world that is being continually recorded, the less there is to photograph, a world saturated with images of Prairies, Tropical rain forests and ice flows. In a society that is gagging on images of nature’s most amazing wonders, we still find it hard to see her miracles that exist on our very own doorstep.

A condition of man is that of control, to function properly we have to believe that we are in charge of our lives, our environment, and our immediate settings. This is a phalicy, we are no more in charge of our existence then we are in charge of the weather.

As an artist my main concern is that of the relationship of control man has with nature. We are locked in an eternal power struggle with nature, trying to force her to do our bidding. Ultimately no matter how hard we try to manipulate nature for our own ends, it is her that controls us, and we are subject to her every whim.

The five images presented here are from a body of work that is an exploration of mans relationship to nature in an urban setting.

The work titled 'REGENERATION' deals with the concept of mans attempted control over nature. How we try to manipulate nature for our own ends, but ultimately nature is much stronger and in the end controls us.
