PEARL announces the opening of Retriever, a tribute to the hunter/gatherer approach to making art. The components of the works for the show are begged, bought or stolen but have been assembled with an eye towards the painterly. Retriever features new works by Armando Andrade Tudela, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Jefford Horrigan, Jeff McMillan, and Richard Wentworth.

Whether mining the indiosyncratic hybrid cultures of his native Lima, or combing the back streets of North London, Armando Andrade Tudela discovers the primitive in all manner of detritus. He is a recent graduate of the MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London, and will begin a two-year residency in 2004 at the Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht.

The emotive constructions of Pedro Cabrita Reis have the ability to usurp the nostalgia of loss with the jolt of the new. His works are often simultaneously painting and sculpture. He will make new work for this, his first exhibition in London. Cabrita Reis has exhibited in numerous international exhibitions and is representing Portugal at the 50th Venice Biennale. He lives and works in Lisbon.

Jefford Horrigan’s works cross many disciplines including drawing, sculpture and performance. For Retriever he is showing recent freestanding ‘paintings’ in which he impregnates scavenged materials with significant amounts of paint. Horrigan’s practice includes not only exhibitions but also more transient ‘situations’, which have taken place throughout Europe and the UK. He has most recently returned from a stint as guest artist at the B.a.d Foundation, Rotterdam.

In his most recent works, Jeff McMIllan explores the interface between minimalism and consumerism. Found boxes are submerged in a pool of paint, one side at a time; the resulting surface tension sublimates the history of the object while underscoring the process. He recently participated in John Moores 22, Liverpool, Chockerfuckingblocked, Jeffrey Charles Gallery, London, and Semi Detached, Sala Diaz, San Antonio, Texas. He is based in London.

Richard Wentworth’s new works are salvage from a recent trip to France, and are a convergence of his highly attuned eye and the searing summer heat. He created Thinking Aloud, the Hayward travelling exhibition, and last year’s ArtAngel project An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Kings Cross. His work is currently on show in Absolut Generations at the 50th Venice Biennale. He lives and works in London.

Retriever runs from 3 to 26 October 2003. PEARL is open Friday to Sunday from 12-6 PM, or by appointment. Enquiries: jeffmcmillan@pearlprojects.com
