Present (Perfect
Need and Perfect Completion) Warsaw
Project Space, Open Artists Studios, 34 George Leigh Street, Ancoats,
Manchester, M4 5DG Exhibition
Dates: - 22. 8. 03 – 21. 9.03 The on-going success of Warsaw Projects continues with the presentation of the first solo exhibition by Judith Rothwell. Having graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University this summer, Judith’s work highlights the maturity and commitment that set her aside from her contemporaries, and has seen her inclusion in this year’s Northern Graduates. The exhibition will include around a dozen works, completed during and since her final year, that are previously unseen, showcasing the emerging talent of this tremendous painter. Judith is essentially an abstract painter. Working in Acrylic, she builds up layers of vivid colours forming graphic patterns. Judith’s work focuses on stereotyping, unheard voices and forgotten arguments that suppress women into "low art" and an uneasy glamour. Using her work as an alter ego, She aims to investigate how past attitudes against women have shaped art, what art is today and where it will progress to tomorrow. Judith’s paintings explore what is underneath appearance and which layer represents the psychological from the physical? Painting in mainly in acrylic, she asks the viewer to rationalise what they see in the dry, flat and brittle paint and how it's theory could be applied in the everyday. Like the striping away of wallpaper to discover old patterns, Judith’s paintings display the powerful allure of nostalgia. Judith Rothwell recently exhibited at Fresh Art and is included in this years Northern Graduates selection in London.
