Jin Ming Laurence Miller Gallery will feature haunting, powerful and intriguing works by Chinese-born artist DoDo Jin Ming from May 20 – June 30, 2004. water fire earth air represents a synthesis of two bodies of work that derive their imagery from the awesome power of nature: dramatic seascapes from the series Free Element, and mysterious and intriguing sunflowers from the series Behind My Eyes. Included will be grand, large-scale gelatin silverprints of wild and turbulent seas, and toned silverprints of hooded sunflowers, which seem to be marching to a distant heaven. In concert, these two series form a tangible realization of the artist’s impetus to give visual expression to the inner life of the soul. DoDo Jin Ming was trained initially as a classical violinist (her given name DoDo refers to the note in the musical scale) and the idea of music as inspiration permeates every aspect of her imagery. Her churning seascapes crash, divide and swell like a symphony of orchestral sound. The sunflowers of Behind My Eyes play to a different tune, a more organized sense of movement, like a corps de ballet or band marching in unison. Particularly awesome are six diptychs, each populated by sunflowers in different states of growth or decay. Some are hooded as protection from birds; others have begun to die, and lie closer to the ground. All contain multiple images of specimens that seem human in form and movement, calling to mind the powerful video images of Shirin Neshat’s Iranian women on the beach. water fire earth air is DoDo Jin Ming’s third solo show at Laurence Miller Gallery. Her recent three-person exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, with Gustave LeGray and Hiroshi Sugimoto, was critically acclaimed and reveals an artist in command of her medium. Ms. Jin Ming was born in Beijing, and presently resides in New York City.
