About Trans
Europe Express:
The debut Trans Europe Express event was on the 10th and 11th October
2003 at the ICA in London, showcasing some of the most exciting DJs, producers
and live acts from all corners of the EU; including Tellé Records’
Bjørn Torske (one of the leading lights of the Scandinavian house
scene), T. Raumschmiere (who released his ‘Radio Blackout’
LP on Mute late last year to huge critical acclaim), The Glimmer Twins
(the DJ duo behind the massively influential ‘Culture Club’
and ‘Serie Noir’ compilations), Headman (arguably the man
who kicked off the whole disco-punk revival) and Mute’s Debasser
(part of self-proclaimed ‘UK bass’ party people Wide). A follow
up one-day event on 16th October at Stockholm’s internationally
acclaimed Berns club saw a scaled down version of the same line-up. Trans
Europe Express was founded by deepbluemusic’s Zak Frost and Perverted
Science’s Circus Love to promote and showcase the finest talent
from all over Europe, unquestionably the world’s most exciting place
to be for music right now.
What the
press said about last year’s event…
‘Another week in London brings another essential festival…Trans
Europe Express is akin to a school European exchange programme, bringing
some of Europe’s finest underground DJs and acts to The ICA.’

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
BANGKOK IMPACT
Bangkok Impact is the nom de disco of talented newcomer Sami Liuski. Sami
is a 23-year-old electronics genius from the small town of Rovaniemi in
northern Finland. Over the past two years he’s released a handful
of incredible singles (Vice Magazine memorably described last year’s
‘Masters Of The Universe’ as ‘the best dancefloor record
pressed onto plastic this year.’) and in 2003 he released debut
album ‘Traveller’ for influential Italo-disco imprint Crème
Organisation. Crème aside, Sami has additionally released excellent
tracks on I-F’s Viewlexx label (‘The Floor’) and contributed
‘Bright Light, Dim Light’ to Clone’s superb ‘We
Still Kill The Old Way’ compilation, a comprehensive introduction
to the burgeoning Dutch dance scene.
BOXSAGA
BoxSaga is the nom d’electronique of prolific producer/song-writer/musician
Nick Phillips. Having released early singles through Island Blue (‘Attata’)
and Junior (‘New York, New York’) three years ago, it’s
his recent ‘Computer Love’ single that’s really been
turning heads. The track, a seductive, synth-driven slice of electronic
bump’n’grind featuring Spektrum’s Lola Olafisoye on
vocals, found its way into the more discerning DJs’ record-boxes.
Keen to show that ‘Computer Love’ wasn’t the only trick
up his production sleeves, Phillips has teamed up with the similarly feisty
Lyric L for ‘Back Inside’, due on Non-Stop in June. Their
TEE show will feature cuts from the forthcoming Box Saga LP as well as
tracks recorded in collaboration with super-slim flanneur Edwin Laliq.
Aforementioned Spektrum chanteuse Lola – and perhaps a special guest
or two - will be joining them for the ride.
CHURCH OF
CARBON
Church Of Carbon is the first live band project of Patrick Pulsinger and
friends Gerhard Potuznik (GD Luxxe, Chicks On Speed, Electronicat, Sluta
Leta) and Phillip Quehenberger, all well-known artists on the Cheap Records
roster. Potuznik and Pulsinger released the first CoC EP ‘Angst’
on German electro label Disko B in 2001 and scored a dark dancefloor smash
with their version of ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’. Synth rocker
Phillip Quehenberger, known for collaborations with COIL, Electronicat
and Franz West and his uncompromising live performances, joins them for
their forthcoming debut album ‘Compute Into Darkness’. Guests
like Peaches, Brendan M Gillen, Salvatore Principato and Electronicat
are all lined up to appear on their debut long-player, due later this
year. Check www.churchofcarbon.com for further information.
CIRCUS LOVE
Circus Love promoted the infamous 333 club night Perverted Science for
four years ending it in 2003 to launch his new electro label Orson Records
alongside electro duo Transparent Sound. He also DJ’s spinning everything
from electro, disco, house, hip hop, punk-funk and techno creating his
own unholy sonic stew. He has played at many of the best clubs and bars
in the Nordic region and is one of the founders behind the TEE festival
with Zak Frost. Circus Love is also a resident at West London’s
freshest club night Nodisko, which launched at infamous nightspot Woody’s
in December last year.
ZAK FROST
Zak has been quietly whipping up a storm around Europe for the last decade
and has performed in over 23 different countries. His legendary deepblue
parties have received huge press acclaim due to their diverse soundtrack
and unique atmosphere and, together with TEE cohort Circus Love and Magic
Jase, he has recently launched a new West London night of Italo-disco,
punk-funk, and electro called Nodisko. Zak is also one half of Frogsnatcher
on Afro Art Records, producing the tastiest Jamaican-style nu-house loved
by everyone from Mr. Scruff to Tony Humphries, and he co-compiled 2002’s
'ScandoNova' album (with friend Bjørn Torske), showcasing the most
exciting new sounds to come from the Nordic dance community. And alongside
Olanskii and Classic’s Rob Mello, Zak has recently launched a new
‘post-house’ house night Horny Pony at the Notting Hill Arts
Club.
G-HA
After fourteen years of DJing, Geir 'G-HA' Aspenes is long since established
as a leading alternative house jock on the Scandinavian club circuit.
His 'Skansen Music' mix for Glasgow Underground, released two-and-a-half
years ago, celebrated his fifth anniversary as resident at the renowned
Oslo club, which has just reopened for business after a two-year closure.
Since the club first opened its doors to the dancing public in the mid-Nineties,
guests such as the Idjut Boys, Maurice Fulton, DJ Q, Ralph Lawson and
Matthew ‘Bushwacka!’ B have played with Geir.
NICK LUSCOMBE
Nick Luscombe's influential Flo-Motion radio show has been broadcast live
on London's XFM every Sunday since 2000. Flo-Motion is a modern blend
of deep club music with elements of broken beat, techno, jazz and dub
as well as sounds from the more experimental side of electronic music.
Nick regularly DJs out at various nights in London, Europe and Japan.
His sets vary between playing at large outdoor festivals to smaller, more
experimental club events. Nick has compiled and produced two compilation
albums of modern Japanese electronica, and has been asked to compile three
new collections for release this autumn/winter.
GUGLIELMO
MASCIO
As the lead member of Rome’s Nu Funk Klan DJ collective, Guglielmo
has forged a unique sound that takes in disco, house, rock and electro.
He is the resident at Underground City and also plays at all the other
great Italian clubs as well as trips to Bergen, Oslo, London and Geneva.
He has now started his debut production work, alongside Italian legend
Claudio Coccoluto, causing a sensation with the kind of warped disco that
Metro Area would be proud of, but with that special touch of la dolce
vita.
OLANSKII
Ola ‘Olanskii’ Smith-Simonsen has come a long way since throwing
illegal parties in a converted shooting range under a gun shop. Having
cut his DJ teeth at renowned London clubs such as the 333, Mass and Heaven
playing drum’n’bass, funk and hip hop, it was in 1999 when
playing at Brixton’s Dogstar that he was bitten by the house music
bug. It’s a bite that remains to this day. Having worked as music
programmer at West London’s legendary Notting Hill Arts Club for
several years, he’s now concentrating on his Sun-kissed club night,
which has seen him spin all across Europe. He’s also working closely
with Skansen resident G-HA; only fitting, then, that the pair will be
showcasing their own brand of electronic disco and quirky house together
at this year’s TEE.
S.U.M.O.
S.U.M.O. is the collective name for Stockholm duo Combo and Alf Tumble.
Standing for ‘Swedish Underfed Music Operators’ (their love
is music is equalled only by their love of food), the pair produce Afro,
Latin and jazz-tinged house as warm and breezy as a Scandinavian summer.
They’ve taken their S.U.M.O. Sessions across the globe (including
a whistle-stop tour of the States) and count diverse names such as Dr.
Bob Jones, Roger Sanchez and the Kyoto Jazz Massive amongst their famous
fans. As well as bringing their all-singing, all-dancing live experience
to Trans Europe Express, they’ve got several new releases too come
on Sfere, Seasons and Bubble Soul.
DJ TLR
TLR is one of the prime movers ’n’ shakers on the Italo-disco
scene. Based on the West Coast of Holland around Den Haag, this tough,
Eighties-influenced strain of electro is arguably one of the hottest sounds
to emerge from underground clubland in recent times. Having grew up DJing
at punk and jungle parties, he was swept away with the first wave of Den
Haag electronics and the early works of Electronome and I-F and in 1997
co-founded Global Darkness (his website globaldarkness.com is now one
of the biggest and most active electro/disco communities on the Internet)
and four years later moved to Crème Organisation. Here he records
as Mr. Clavio (with Legowelt) and has helped the label gain a cult following.
With his ‘You Bet We’ve Got Something Personal Against You’
compilation dropping on Crème in March 2004, and having already
appeared at London Italo/electro nights Cocoadisco and Own Devices, his
dirty gospel is spreading to the UK. Expect TLR – like Italo-disco
itself – to be doing great things in 2004.
TRANSPARENT
SOUND
Formed in 1994 by Orson Bramley and Martin Brown, Transparent Sound are
one of the UK's most established and respected electro acts. In 2002 they
released their seminal debut album 'Emotional Amputation' (voted 'electro
LP of the year' in Jockey Slut) and, through their brand new label Orson
Records, released a more diverse mini-album 'Dirty Curtains & Football
Posters' in October of last year. In 2004 they will be releasing a series
of dancefloor-based electro EPs on both Orson and Electrix.
XPLODING
PLASTIX
Jens Petter Nilsen and Hallvard Wennersberg Hagen were involved in several
electronic punk outfits in their hometown Oslo before they decided to
make music together in 1999. Combining influences as far reaching as Ninja
Tune, jazz drummer Gene Krupa and Ennio Morricone’s Italian-erotic-horror
period, they made a six-track demo and released their debut 7-inch ‘Treat
Me Mean, I Need The Reputation’ a year later. A groovy, glorious
riot of playful melodies and cut-up sampladelica, it found its way into
the record boxes of Coldcut, Mr. Scruff, John Peel, LTJ Bukem and Ross
Allen, amongst others, and was re-released by forward-thinking drum’n’bass
label in 2002. They have since released a series of singles, two acclaimed
albums in Europe and also won a Grammy for 'Best Electronic Album'. Their
debut LP 'Amateur Girlfriends' gets a long-awaited UK release on June
7th.
The TEE festival
is back, bigger and better than ever before, at Cargo on May 21st/22nd.
Headline acts and DJs include the cream of Europe¹s underground dance
scenes, such as Xploding Plastix, DJ TLR, S.U.M.O, Bangkok Impact, BoxSaga,
