GALLERY B:
ROMAN VASSEUR
Murder as a Fine Art (The Ritualised Death of the International Mural
Artist)
13 August-12 September, 2004
Opening: Thursday 12 August, 6-9pm
Jeffrey Charles Gallery is pleased to present two solo shows simultaneously.
Gallery 'A' contains a video by Matt & Ross entitled Temporary Tattoo.
Gallery 'B' contains Roman Vasseur's series of artist's impressions, architectural
drafts and a text: Murder as a Fine Art (The Ritualised Death of the International
Mural Artist).
Regressing from where Bruce Nauman's early films were located, Matt &
Ross' practice comes from a similarly mundane response to having nothing
in particular to make a video about. Matt & Ross' camera gets pointed
at some futile activity, reminiscent of the kind of bored intrigue inspired
by trying to avoid work. Abjection subsumes the media-image under the
glaze of the screen. The bedroom domesticity of Matt & Ross' video
work takes on a cool intentionality within the screen/gallery context.
Roman Vasseur's Murder as a Fine Art (The Ritualised Death of the International
Mural Artist) is a polemic that proposes the sacrifice and ceremonial
burial of a mural artist as an alternative spectacle to neo-liberal public
art projects.
