291 Performance
Lingua Franca
291 Main Gallery, Tuesday 21st September 2004 Doors 8pm, performance at
8.30pm
Lingua Franca is an Anglo-German project within which five artists have
come together in order to collaborate in the making of a series of sound
works, both solo and ensemble, to be heard at the point of creation. "What
one hears is what one sees, what one sees is what one hears"
All of the artists involved are active in some aspect of the visual arts,
as well as being virtuoso performers on their individual instruments.
They have come together for this, their first collaboration in order to
use their combined and individual artistic languages to express the "Lingua
Franca" of art. The artists involved embody the essence of European
Art Totale, since their individual control over their artistic disciplines
is complete, within the context of the total aural visual concept. Featuring
artists include Jeff Cloke- Resonation: live sound art created entirely
from the sounds in the room, modified only by the reverberations and resonances
of the room itself; Guy Cooper- Percussion: Quicksilver technique coupled
with acute ensemble awareness characterise this masterful artist; Thomas
Kumlehn- Flute, Saxophone, Voice: Influences from India and Europe, pastoral,
thoughtful with European cosmopolitan edginess; Tony Moore- Cello: An
internationally respected visual artist and virtuoso cellist; and Hella
Von Ploetz- Glass, Harp: A beautiful instrument, played in a beautiful,
haunting way with spirituality, discipline and strength. 291 Gallery¹s
visual and acoustic properties will be utilised to the full for this work.
The artists will be dispersed throughout the auditorium and the audience
will be treated to an ever-changing acoustic and visual experience.
