Urbis hosts The Peter Saville Show Exhibition |
23
January until 18 April 2004. Best known in Manchester for his work as art director at Factory Records, collaborating with bands such as Joy Division and New Order, Saville played a seminal role in an era which shaped Manchester’s music scene. More recently his client list has included household names such as Pulp, Gay Dad and Suede within the music industry and Mandarina Duck, Dior and Givenchy, and fashion designers Stella McCartney and Yohji Yamamoto within the fashion world. Saville said: ‘Growing up around Manchester has characterised my work - the juxtaposition of industrial and rural which is so characteristic of the area, has always been intrinsic to what I do. Philosophically it's rewarding to be asked back to show the work in the city where its spirit belongs - and after all these years I'm intrigued to know what Manchester makes of it.’ Urbis Creative Director, Scott Burnham said: ‘Peter Saville's work has not only been instrumental in shaping Manchester's cultural identity, but has influenced the visual language of urban culture itself. With a career which has reached legendary status in fields ranging from album cover design to fashion, it is fitting that The Peter Saville Show comes home to Manchester from its tour of London and Tokyo to celebrate the career of one of the Manchester's great contributions to contemporary culture. This exhibition is the first of many large-scale exhibitions which places Urbis on the international stage with its ongoing exploration of urban culture.” For further media information or images please contact Peggy Manning on 0161 605 8212 or email peggy@urbis.org.uk Peter Saville biography is available on request.
