ICA PROJECTS
MON-RAK TRANSISTOR (A TRANSISTOR LOVE STORY)
'Heartbreaking delirium' Time Out
'pure kitsch...magical' Empire
>From the producers of Tears of the Black Tiger comes the perfect summer
>movie, a potent blend of Elvis Presley-style musical, love story and
poisonous social satire in Hysteric Glamour t-shirts. Pan is a country
boy newlywed to his first love, Sadaw, when he's signed up for military
service. Success in a local talent contest turns Pan's head and he goes
AWOL to pursue his dream, but instead finds himself fending off the advances
of his predatory manager. As Sadaw is seduced by a smooth-talking worm
tablet salesman, Pan winds up begging on the streets having committed
manslaughter. A hit at the 2002 Cannes Festival confirming Pen-ek as the
young pretender to Wong Kar Wai.
Dir Pen-ek Ratanaruang Thailand 2001, 120 mins,, English subtitles, 15
COWBOY
BE-BOP (part of the COMICA Festival)
'Wonderfully dark and film-noirish' Washington Post
In the days leading up to Halloween 2071, the bounty hunting crew of the
spaceship Be-Bop are bored and broke. When news comes of an astronomical
reward for the capture of a biochemical terrorist, the languid Spike and
his cohorts pull out all the stops ... . Part high-tech thriller, part
high-energy action spectacle, this Bladerunner-esque post-modern anime
epic delights with its deep undercurrents and solemn gravity constantly
goosed by goony touches and punctuated by moments of unexpected delicacy.
Shinichiro Watanabe is one of the directors of the new Animatrix films,
released in conjunction with Matrix Reloaded. Dir Shinichiro Watanabe

The Clay Bird
(Matir Moina)
'Easily one of the finest pictures of this year...' New York Times 'wonderful,
a tale told with humour and visual flair' Guardian Tareque Masud's marvellous,
Cannes award-winning story tells of family life during the upheavals of
East Pakistan in the 1960s. Anu is a village boy sent to religious school
by his fundamentalist father. There Anu befriends his irrepressible classmate
Rokon and encounters Ibrahim, a teacher unbound by rigid ideology. When
Anu returns home for the holidays he finds his village vibrant with festivity,
but all is not well as the widening gap between his parents develops into
a tacit conflict that reflects the country's growing political unrest.
Dir Tareque Masud, Bangladesh 2002,

*** *** *** We're delighted to welcome Tareque Masud and his producer/co-writer
Catherine Masud to introduce the screenings on the evening of 4 July with
a Q&A following the 6.30pm show.*** *** ***
THE
INNER TOUR
Ironically, the only way many Palestinian exiles can visit their homes
is by taking a guided coach tour of Israel. The film follows such a group
as the young see their ancestral, deserted villages for the first time
and the older generation search to find the ruins of their homes. Dir
Ra'anan Alexandrowicz
Israel/Palestine 2000, 85 mins, Subs
AL-NASIR
SALAH AL-DIN (SALADIN)
Egypt's first epic, filmed in Eastman colour and wide screen. Chahine's
association of Nasser with the twelfth century Arab leader who united
Arab fiefdoms and liberated Jerusalem from the Crusaders gave the film
a contemporary resonance. Large scale sequences involving thousands of
extras, intimate scenes handled with equal aplomb and sub-plots on the
need for religious tolerance and humanitarian impulses combine to overcome
the idealistic representation of Saladin and ensure that the film, in
its subject and portrayal of Islam, has, perhaps, an even greater relevance
today. Dir Youssef Chahine
Egypt 1963, 145 mins, Subs
AFTER
JENIN
A testimony to the horrors of the Jenin atrocity.(Dir Jenny Morgan, Abu
Dhabi 2002, 52 mins). Plus Staying Alive (Bidna Na'ish). An examination
of Palestinians who risk their lives throwing stones at Israeli soldiers.
(Dir GhadaTerawi Switzerland/Palestine 2001, 28 mins).
