THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT:

Tue 3 Jun, 8 pm
HOPE OF THE STATES
'Britain's most amazing new band' NME
An opportunity to catch one of the UK's most talked about new rock bands in an intimate venue, before they explode onto the world stage. With a name derived from social commentator Albert Deutsch's searing indictment of the US state psychiatric system, Hope of the States were never going to be your average heads-down rock band. Their special mix of orchestral grandeur, darkly lyrical and stylistic leanings and military rhythms, inspired by a truly encyclopaedic musical upbringing, has seen the group wowing critic and music fans alike. Inhabiting a similar space to Sigor Ros and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, the Chichester five piece have honed their sonic assault into a powerful songwriting form. £8, £7 Concs. £6 ICA Members Theatre

ICA PROJECTS
IN THIS WORLD
'astonishing ...The best British film of my life time' Telegraph 'Extraordinary...I urge you to get a ticket' Observer Winner Golden Bear Best Film Berlin 2003 Torn from the headlines, Michael Winterbottom's new film follows the young Jamal as he embarks on a hazardous overland trip from the refugee camp at Peshawar through Iran, Turkey, Italy and France to Sangatte and into the heart of London where he becomes 'M1187511'. Winterbottom and his brilliant writer Tony Grisoni have struck a fine balance between the fictional and documentary elements of the film, harnessing the intimate and immediate possibilities of DV production to full effect. Even more crucially, they give us cause to see behind the headlines at the broader political and moral concerns. As fine a piece of work as we've seen from this versatile director. Dir Michael Winterbottom, UK, 2002, 89 mins, English subtitles 15

ICA PROJECTS
THOMAS PYNCHON: A JOURNEY INTO THE MIND OF [P.]
'intriguing...required viewing' Time Out
Unravelling the enigma of the reclusive Thomas Pynchon (b.1937), one of the most influential but least public writers of our time, the Dubinis' compelling documentary makes spirited use of archive photographs, historical documents, news footage and interviews with Pynchon's friends and fanatics. Spiralling around themes of paranoiac conspiracies and mind-control experiments, culminating in an account of an extraordinary lookalike event and the devastating CNN news footage of Pynchon snatched on the streets, the film presents a wonderful feast of Pynchonalia served up with a sense of humour and a generous helping of music by the Residents. Dir Fosco & Donatello Dubini, Germany, 2001, 92 mins

Season
THE BRITISH CONNECTION
The ICA's investigation of another facet of filmic migration continues with a selection of British-connected features that found themselves at the very heart of that most American of cinematic institutions, the Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences - the 'Oscars', now in their 75th year. These stunning new prints represent a British-connected winner of the coveted Best Picture prize, one from each decade from the 1950s-70s. The season concludes in July with The Last Emperor, American Beauty and Gladiator.

BEN-HUR
'Ben-Hur still stands up in all its grandeur' Sunday Times Famously dominated by its awesome 20-minute chariot race and Miklos Rozsa's roaring music, this historical and religious epic stars Charlton Heston and Jack Hawkins in a visually spectacular movie. Dir William Wyler, US, 1929, 217 mins

FAMILY KNOTS AND ABUSIVE TIES:
MINOR MISHAPS (ANNETTE K OLESON)
The sixth in a series of films and discussions on the subject of Family Knots and Abusive Ties introduced by and discussed with psychoanalyst Andrea Sabbadini and film historian Peter Evans with guest Paul Clements, Principal of Mountview Theatre. The way film-makers from different cinematic traditions have portrayed families on screen and interpreted their dysfunctions, from comic misunderstandings to tragic abuse, continues to be explored. There are a further two films in this series.

THE MIND'S MAKING: AUTISM AND EXTREME BEHAVIOUR
Nature or nurture? - a question controversially applied to autism. Can autism be put down to 'extreme male behaviour', written into the genes, and an extension of boys' lower empathy skills when compared to girls? Or are other factors more important? Tonight's speakers explore the possible causes of autism and ask whether early intervention can help. Simon Baron-Cohen is professor of psychology and psychiatry, Cambridge; Peter Hobson is professor of developmental psychology at the Tavistock; Charlotte Moore is a journalist at the Guardian, who writes regularly about life with her two autistic sons. Chair: Jill Dawson, whose latest novel, Wild Boy, was inspired by the story of history's first documented autistic child. £8, £7 concs. £6 ICA members Nash Room

5-30 June
GOD BLESS AMERICA
There is much talk of the US as the imperial power for the 21st century - but this domination is based not on a physical presence but on more subtle cultural, political and economic influences. In this season we take a sideways glance at the US to explore its pervasive presence and its welcome and less-welcome seductions.

The ICA Economist Debate
God Bless America
Thurs 5 Jun, 6.45pm
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Many decry the American cultural and military empire, and the 'imperialism' of globalisation and free trade. But can empires be double-edged, traumatically imposing modernity and even democracy on their subjects? Are empires ever really inspired by principles of liberty? What is the future of the US as a global imperial power? Speakers: Niall Ferguson, historian, TV presenter, and author of Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World; Bill Emmott, editor-in-chief, The Economist and author of 20:21 Vision; Robin Blackburn, Professor of Sociology at Essex University, founding editor of New Left Review, author of The Making of New World Slavery. Chair: Ngaire Woods, Fellow in Politics and International Relations at Oxford, author of The Political Economy of Globalisation.

THE HIDDEN CAMERAS
ROYAL CITY
'a unique mind-warp of tender gospel and soulful folk...' NME Renowned for their revelatory live performances, Toronto's Joel Gibb brings his Hidden Cameras collective for their debut London headline show. A talent of uncommon melodic and poetic gifts, Gibb describes his sound as 'gay church folk music': deliciously open accounts of homosexuality; epic, gospel mixed with acoustic folk; erotic and romantic themes infused with spiritual imagery; and a fluid, communal line up of over a dozen musicians, dancers and artists. Fellow Toronto natives Royal City play an affecting, melancholy blues, with spacey banjo, starlit piano and crackling vocals. £8, £7 Concs. £6 ICA Members Theatre
