VICTOR GALLERY - HITOKO URAGO |
SHOW: 21 Jan - 12 Mar 04 HITOKO
URAGO Nancy Victor is proud to present Hitoko Urago's first solo show. On both large scale and intimitely small canvases, Urago paints flat cell- like bodies appearing as randomly placed or highly ordered. In undertaking these different formations, the paintings assert a reserved calmness. Figurative elements are played down to a minimum, reduced to a 'syibo' (cell). These appear as transparent planes of colour, overlapping and multiplying across a canvas. The life of the syibo is played out in each painting. The character of the syibo presents a faceless tableau of gentle, faded, flickering colours; distinctiveness is dissolved by endless combinations of hue and transparency. Each syibo is transformed as it overlaps with another in order to produce an anonymous world distanced from the clutter of everyday life. Hitoko Urago received her MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2003. Urago was born in Osaka, Japan and now lives and works in London For
