Contemporary Space - BRILLIANT |
12 Feb - 25 Apr 04 The V&A is staging its first exhibition of contemporary lighting. Brilliant features nine dramatic light installations and a dazzling display of domestic lights by some of the world's leading designers. The exhibition in the V&A's Contemporary Space opens on 12 February 2004. The light installations in the first gallery are by Ron Arad, Ingo Maurer, Sharon Marston, Tord Boontje, Georg Baldele, Francesco Draisci, Kazuhiro Yamanaka, Paul Cocksedge and Arik Levy. The second part of the exhibition features hundreds of domestic lights and 'light-objects' by designers who have produced some of the most exciting and innovative products of recent years including Tom Dixon, Marcel Wanders, Gitta Gschwendtner and Karim Rashid. The exhibition includes lighting from the strictly functional to the wildly ostentatious. It will show the range of new lighting forms, fabrics and technologies from domestic lamps to futuristic lighted textiles. A light installation 'Field of Light' by Bruce Munro will illuminate the V&A's elegant garden during the exhibition. Brilliant is accompanied by a book Brilliant: Lights & Lighting (£14.95, paperback) published by V&A Publications. This is the first title in a new design series called V&A Contemporary. Jane
Pavitt is the curator of Brilliant and author of the accompanying book.
She is the University of Brighton Research Fellow at the V&A and has
