CLICK: A Celebration of Sight

CELEBRITIES DONATE TREASURED SIGHTS TO SAVE SIGHT
18 March-4 April 2004 – 11am-6pm daily

Tracey Emin, Sam Taylor Wood, Mario Testino, Nick Knight, Betty Jackson and Paul Smith are among over sixty photographers and celebrities who have donated images to a unique collection of photography on show at the.gallery@oxo on London’s South Bank from 18th March to 4th April 2004.

CLICK: A Celebration of Sight has been curated by photographer Mary McCartney Donald on behalf of Sight Savers International. The exhibition explores and celebrates the gift of sight. The photographs are shown with the stories which explain their significance and the offer a fascinating insight into the sights, scenes and views - whether extraordinary or everyday - that people treasure most.

Mary, who has supported the charity since attending a Sight Savers reception hosted by Cherie Blair last year, explains; “Photographers working in a range of different genres as well as personalities from the worlds of art, music, film and fashion were invited to contribute an image of their favourite sight; this could be anything at all which was particularly special to them. The response has been overwhelming.”

As well as one of her own photographs, Mary has chosen one by her mother Linda McCartney for the exhibition, “Mum took this photograph when she was driving through California in 1975. It encompasses her ability to recognise and capture a fleeting moment and I love the spontaneity and funkiness which seems to epitomise the time. My treasured sight is the giant magnolias I photographed in Scotland last spring. This was a gentler moment, but the light shining through the petals with the blue sky behind was both uplifting and unforgettable.”

Mary goes on, “The diversity of these photographs shows just how personal sight is and this is something that comes through in CLICK: A Celebration of Sight. The exhibition is sometimes surprising, often inspiring and certain to provoke visitors to consider and celebrate the gift of sight.”

Following the exhibition selected photographs will be sold online to raise money to support Sight Savers’ work preventing and curing blindness and supporting those who will never see in some of the poorest communities in the world
