Have you ever nostalgically dreamed of living in a world of peace, understanding and sharing, a self-less, ego-less world? Have you ever considered putting away the sharp knives of cynicism, pulling down the barbed wire fence/anti-vandal-painted-high-wall-with-broken-glass-on-top of self-defence and revealing for public display…your WORST PIECE OF WORK EVER? Have you thought it might, in a sort of cathartic, don’t-care-what-anyone-else-thinks kind of way, be kind of nice? Nice??! Of course you haven’t.

But this is exactly what We Can Work it Out proposes.

Nineteen artists are submitting their very worst piece of work for display at the Three Colts Gallery and, in the spirit of caring and sharing, are to improve one of the other artworks. This demands an act of surrender and exchange. If we designate the work as the space of the other, there is a risk of “annihilating, killing or resuscitating” (Luce Irigaray) in the process. An opposition to do with the ownership of this space, a potential loss of self. “The only possible solution here is to reject this very opposition and to adopt both positions simultaneously” (Slavoj Zizek). A simultaneous letting go and empathising with, in order to achieve transcendence. This involves negotiation:

Try to see it my way
Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong
While you see it your way
There’s a chance that we may fall apart before too long
We can work it out
We Can Work It Out
