Takashi Murakami is one of the most admired and innovative contemporary
Japanese artists working today. Born in 1962, he has created a colourful
world of fantastical, filled with colourful flowers, fantastical mushrooms,
and floating eyes as well as unique cartoon-like characters. Murakami's
work is influenced by Western art, such as American Pop and Andy Warhol
and Japanese culture.
In 1993 the artist invented Mr Dob, a character that became his signature
motif. Mr Dob is repeated consistently in his paintings, sculptures and
T-shirts. TAKASHI Murakami recently created two new characters, Kaikai
and Kiki.
Takashi Murakami: Kaikai Kiki is the first presentation of Murakami's
work in the United Kingdom and features painting, sculpture and wallpaper
made since 1999 to the present.
Takashi Murakami: Kaikai Kiki is organised by the Fondation Cartier pour
l'art contemporain, Paris, in collaboration with the Serpentine Gallery.
