‘A Surface In Between’ an event produced by The Side Effects of Urethane

'A Surface in Between' a group exhibition, presents work from over 30 international artists whose work is associated with the wonderful world of skateboarding.

‘A Surface In between’ produced by the Side Effects of Urethane takes place at the Arthouse 168 Pitfield Street, Hoxton N1 from 24th May - 7th June 2003. Open Daily.

As a continuation from the original event, which took place at the old Hartley’s Jam Factory in November 2001, 'A Surface in Between' presents the wide scope of art activity related to skate culture: drawing, painting, sculpture, printed-matter, photography and film. This year, with a new larger venue and extended dates, a stronger more refined showcase of international artwork will be in place. The exhibition is in two parts and is situated on two floors in a disused Victorian school in Hoxton, East London, that is to be converted into a contemporary loft apartment building as basis of the Arthouse project.

The artists have been selected to reflect the diversity and creativity within the skateboard community, which is in essence highly individual, motivated and productive across a broad cultural arena. Artists and skateboarders involved include: Toby Shuall, Marcus Oakley, Thomas Campbell, Jim Houser, Pete Fowler, Mark Foster, Will Sweeney, Dan Sparkes, James Jarvis, Toby Paterson, Nik Taylor, Ben Sansbury, Sam Ashley, Richard Sayer, Tobin Yelland, Marke Newton, Benjamin Deberdt, Tuukka Kaila, Oli Watson, Marc Johnson, Bobby Puleo, Chris Johannsen, Oliver Barton, Phil Frost, Kelly Ryan, Ged Wells, Richard Hart, Simon Evans and Tony Cox.

There will be a ramp installation that will be a “totally unique work of art in itself” and is to fill the huge atrium space that runs the full length of the building. Toby Shuall who thought up the concept says “There is only one obstacle in the room surrounded by transitions so you can approach it from any angle. The obstacle itself is made up from 18 banks and resembles an octagon shape.”

Entertainment will be courtesy of Headshoppe & Mt Egypt plus special guests.

'A Surface in Between' is not intended as a definitive representation of what is happening in an ever rapidly growing skateboarding culture, but rather its better understood as representing a slice, from a very large, healthy, home-baked and organic cake. Visitors to 'A Surface in Between' will encounter a simultaneously happy, peaceful and anarchic presence.

Admitance is FREE, but all guests must obtain an invitation from their local skate store. Information can be obtained on; www.sideeffectsofurethane.com.

In association with Playstation 2, Olympus Digital Cameras, Eastpak, Vans, Carhartt, Cide, Suburban Bliss, Mleko and Bullet.
