Richard Long

Haunch of Venison installation 2003
PRESS RELEASE

Richard Long
HERE AND NOW AND THEN
June 11th – September 27th 2003

Wisdom is, very often, as wisdom laughs.

Haunch of Venison is delighted to announce this exhibition of new work by internationally acclaimed British artist Richard Long. For over 35 years, with the emphasis on both personal experience and ideas, Richard Long has made art in many places around the world by making walks in rural and wilderness landscapes. His simple and direct engagement is realised by leaving and recording traces of his journeys, creating works concerned with time, movement and locality.

The new works exhibited at Haunch of Venison will span the variety of media Long employs, including photographs, sculptures, and mud and text works made directly on the gallery walls. Two of the text works are from Celtic walks in Galicia and Brittany. He also recently travelled to India, where he spent time among the Warli tribe as part of a forthcoming collaboration with the artist Jivya Soma Mashe, and he will show a number of works derived from this experience.

Also included will be a River Avon mud work based on the ancient I-Ching hexagram for MOUNTAIN, as well as an elliptical floor sculpture of flint and chalk, a microcosm of Norfolk. In both cases this will be the first time examples of such works will be shown in London.

Born in Bristol, Richard Long studied at the West of England College of Art in Bristol, and later at St Martin’s School of Art in London, leaving in 1968. He has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries internationally, with many solo exhibitions throughout Europe, Australia, the United States and Japan.

Among his numerous awards and honours, he won the Turner Prize in 1988 and was made Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 1990. He featured in Documenta, 1972, and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, 1976. His work is in many important public and private collections worldwide, including the Guggenheim, New York; The Tate Gallery, London and the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue detailing Richard Long’s recent work both in galleries and in the landscape.
