Longhurst's show of new work, Breed
Thursday 3rd Feb 2005, 6 - 9pm
For several years Jo Longhurst has been photographing dogs with a particular focus on their breeding and lineage. Anthropomorphism therefore is not the issue. In these elegantly posed photographs the dogs have been promoted from symbol, allegory or accessory to become the subject itself. These sitters literally take the place of their absent owners. Mute as they are, the glances they throw back at us remain inscrutable, free from easy psychologising. In accordance with the artist¹s wishes, these photographs speak for themselves.
Jo Longhurst will also be exhibiting this year in the Folkwang Museum, Essen, Germany and at the Rencontre d¹Arles, France and is currently working on her PhD at the Royal College of Art, London.
