JOHNS : Prints 1987 - 2001
Jasper Johns is considered one of the greatest living print artists of our time. Since 1960 he has worked closely with ULAE in a variety of printmaking techniques to investigate and develop existing compositions. This reinvention of familiar themes and imagery has made printmaking an essential element of Johns’ work. "What is interesting about using an existing image is that you can see how other things affect the meaning. But you can’t separate this from the way it was done. You work a certain way you get a certain kind of meaning." JASPER
JOHNS Jasper Johns, quoted from Lasting Impressions: A Jasper Johns Retrospective, Vanity Fair, May 1986 Over the last fifteen years, Jasper Johns has contributed incalculably to the printed form. This exhibition aims to analyze the most recent elements of this masterly œuvre and to present them for the first time in the United Kingdom. A folio of a selection of the prints exhibited will accompany the exhibition with an essay by Professor James Cuno, Director of the Courtauld Institute, a noted scholar of Johns’ work. ULAE is set to publish the second volume of the Catalogue Raisonné of prints in 2004. For more
