Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Lamp 1997
The centrepiece of the show Brushstroke Still Life with Lamp is known as ‘the last still life’, since Lichtenstein completed it only three months before his death in 1997, leaving its two companion pieces Still Life with Coffee Pot and Still Life with Box unfinished. Each of these still lifes were to be slashed across the surface with a painted brushstroke, which the artist applied once the screenprinting process was complete. The concept for the ‘obliterating brushstroke’ came to Lichtenstein in a dream; indeed he often generated work based on ideas carried over from the previous day’s work that had ‘cooked in him overnight.’ For
