GINGER
ROGERS
New work by Polly Benford
GINGER ROGERS
is a new exhibition at M+R showing drawings and moving image by Polly
Benford. For Polly the fun in a Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire film comes
from the graceful messing about on stairs in long skirts and heels, the
jumping on
furniture and through spinning doors, and all the while maintaining a
sense of what the other person is doing and instinctively taking hold
of a hand without having to look for it. But it's the dress that she cannot
help but watch as they dance together on film which is why Ginger dances
alone for this exhibition.
In a style
reminiscent of Eadweard Muybridge, dances from a library of Astaire and
Rogers' films are gently taken apart and their intrinsic parts studied,
before being strung together as moving pictures once again. The blue satin
dress with the ostrich
feathers that Rogers wore dancing Cheek to Cheek in the classic film Top
Hat is taken as a case in point and drawn in isolation. Fred hated the
dress at first but it made the dance just as Ginger said it would.
