Artists Statement.

The French phrase 'Belle Laide' was an integral theme throughout my final honour's year project. It loosely refers to something or someone, originally a woman who remains both beautiful and ugly simultaneously and I have introduced the concept of these two extremes onto my designs. Being drawn towards darker slightly more unsettling images, my fabrics are an infusion of typography, illustration, collage, banal imagery contorted together to give an essence of something more sinister. Choosing to work on silk allows me to develop the contrasting elements of my theme onto the final fabrics.

I have experience working with CAD, various constructed textile techniques, alongside mimaki printing, silk screen-printing, illustration and photography. To the present day I have been developing my theme using photography, I hope to use these images to create linings for various fashion pieces in both menswear and accessories.
