Artist Statement:

The passion I possess for art and architecture seems to grow with every opportunity to see, study and design. The most inspirational aspect of the three years of degree study has been a four-month German exchange trip to Mainz where, outside studio time, I travelled around Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The two projects I underwent on the third year in Cardiff was:

The self-choice major project in which I chose to design a Poetry Library in the Winchester City Water Mill positioned directly over the River Itchen.

Called “Confluence”, meaning the merging of two or more streams, the library incorporates the inspirational Keats Walk through Winchester Water Meadows, which flows through the building independent of the library itself. The two streams of walkers and library readers merge in the coffee bar, which facilitates both.

The main conceptual idea was that “Confluence” would act as a bench in the existing landscape for the people of Winchester to use as they wish. A building that expresses, like the poems it houses, the ideas that are democracy’s bedrock of the mediation between “the inner conscious of the individual reader and the outer world of other people.”

The set-choice minor project of a Tattoo Parlour.

Called “Trademark” the main concept was to establish tattooing as an art on the high street. I diverted the arcade as a short cut through the building and elevated the tattoo parlour onto the first floor with a coffee bar on the ground floor for passing trade and customers. The make-up section is embedded in the basement to mirror its acceptability in the cultural landscape.

Life drawing remains the foundation of my creative ability and I have a passion for all areas of theatre, art and architecture that is integral to my family life.
