Artist Statement

British born Chinese artist Yung works across a variety of mediums, including performance, video, sculpture, drawing and painting. Her eclectic work, often referred to as ‘doodles’ and ‘blobs’ is the starting point to the tensions between her two identities; being British and Chinese. This conflict manifests itself as opposites in her practice, whether chaos versus order or beauty versus repulsion. Motivated by the increasingly mythological notion of self in today’s post 9-11 tick box culture, her artworks deploys the politics of play to expose the art making process. Through installations combining sonic and moving image, Yung opens up rigid systems of looking, investigating spiritual mechanisms that help us endure life’s hardships and reassesses any illusion of a cohesive collective identity.

Prior to pursuing my passion for art, I studied French at Sheffield University and worked in London PR for clients ranging from Microsoft to Warner Brothers. I graduated with a first in my BA (Hons) in Fine Art, The University of Dundee, May 2006.
In January 2006, Clive Gilman, designer, Fact, Liverpool and director, Dundee Contemporary Arts selected me for the Professional Artist Development Scheme, Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester. I am now exhibiting on a local and international level, from Intermedia Gallery, Glasgow, Ganghut, Melbourne, and The Whitechapel Gallery, London to Liverpool Biennial, 2006 and upcoming Florence Biennial. I was commissioned to write a webblog regarding my practice for established arts publication, Artist Newsletter (A-N), also cover featuring as June’s Future Forecast, 2006. Invited by artist Graham Fagen, I have just completed an artist residency at Cove Park, Scotland.
