Artists Statement:
This work is taken from my degree show. I wanted to look at the theme
of 'absence', and ways in which I could evoke the feeling of absence using
colour and tone. I hoped that by using and enhancing empty spaces, it
would suggest the absence of something.
What gets left behind when we move on? Memories, possessions or just a
certain atmosphere? It was this that interested me.
Colour was very important to me within this project as I wanted to convey
a particular atmosphere, and felt that only quite muted colours would
achieve this effect.
The images taken from my book 'Ambience', were presented as I asked the
question: 'What do our walls hold? Do they hold all the experiences and
emotions of all the people that have ever lived there? If so, how much
do they know? I collaborated black and white imagery and text to evoke
these questions within the viewer.
As I graduated in June 2002 with a 2:1, I now hope to pursue my career
within photography and maybe one day own my own studio and business.
