Kate Sunderland Artist Statement In 2002 we moved house and inherited a loft full of saved and hoarded memorabilia. Picking my way through the old objects: buttons, toys, lace, wools, cottons and even old tights was exciting and inspiring and has provided the foundation for my GCSE work. At the same time my grandfather had an 80th birthday party and family memories also provided inspiration for part of my work, especially the photographs and video. I love colour, textiles, fabrics and fashion. The patchwork quilts are influenced by Tracy Emin’s quilts- I liked her use of memories and words. I managed to integrate lots of my own personal letters and photographs, along with old lace, into my quilt. The beautiful hangings of Cornelia Parker excited me and lead to my own hangings. The installations of Louise Bourgeois inspired me and the use of shoes came from my interest in fashion. My early work on Gabriel Orozco inspired my use of shape and pattern. The beautiful work of Chris Drury inspired my use of the written word. I have enjoyed mixing the visual with installation and sound.
