Artist Statement:

Born in Utrecht , Netherlands 11 november 1959

After grammar school,Michiel Jansen studied at the H.K.U.,Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht
In 1987 he finisched the study and became after 5 years: artist /docent 1st degree in drawing and painting art-history

From that time he works in a studio in Amerfoort as a sculptor.At the same time he gives lessons .He is teaching in painting and portrait/nude model etc. at centres of art. So art takes in a central place in his live.

Michiel Jansen starts working with slate during the academy already.
He scratched(drawed) on the surface of the stone,he made high relief in the flat stone.He uses often colour-pigments to give the grey/black stone more expression After a experimental period he uses other specific qualities of this ancient stone.The stratifiedness and and the natural beauty of the inside of the slates is more important in the images of the latest 8 years. He exposed in many galleries, in Holland and in France.You can look after at the his website. His works is mostly free but he created also in commission.

Michiel Jansen creates images which are static and compactor just free in form and rhytm. The starting-point (philosophy) of making sculptures are two extremes. On the one hand the need of food and security.On the other hand the wish to drop all the ballast, to endavour self-realization. The images have the intention to show something about a positive or just a negative motive for someone’s acting.

Anish Kapoor , Ellsworth Kelly and Piet Mondriaan are artists who he admires very much.
