Designer's statement:
I enjoy work that gives me the freedom to express myself, to innovate,
to improvise, to create. I tend to work with bursts of energy turning
from one project to another, though it is of importance to me that anything
I create
should be seen through to completion. My work with magazines illustrates
my working ethic where I ensure everything is produced to high standards
both in terms of content and visual impact. I have completed my degree
in graphic
design specialising in typography producing booklets, advertisements,
leaflets, packaging, brochures, corporate id, direct mail etc and more
recently storyboard design for title sequences. I plan to develop my traditional
typography skills into the motion graphics area with a desire at some
point in my career to work with a team producing film title sequences.
I have fluent
skills in the print based computer programmes of Quark Xpress, Freehand
and Photoshop and enjoy generating original ideas and designs and using
these tools to work them through. I am continually enjoying furthering
my skills with the programmes used for motion graphics like Illustrator,
Premier, Director, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks and After Effects with
the intention of transforming some of my print based graphics and future
projects to the web or to title sequences.
A quote from
Mark Twain captures my current thinking in the progression of my design
work:
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things
that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream.
Discover."
The most
challenging work I have done to date is my design for a dyslexic booklet
- raising awareness of the dyslexic condition by producing a booklet for
schools that does not read in a linear way - demonstrating the plight
of a dyslexic child whose learning methods are so different than the 'logical
way' taught at school. The most exploratory of my design work would either
be the promotional work for the film 'The Fast and the Furious 2' for
which I used typography to depict the high speed digitalised racing culture,
or my design of a font to celebrate and represent 10 years of dance music
for the Ministry of Sound.
