Artists Statement Nicola Wallis I am currently exploring, testing and evaluating the behaviour of different paint substances and other viscous materials including; pigments, varnishes, resins, latex and rubber, gloss and other household paints. Making my own paint, I have pursued the idea of paint forming its’ own surface. Through extensive research and a series of vigorous experiments, I have been using different surface qualities such as glass, Perspex and polyester film samples to successfully cast sheets of paint off. The work deals with painting and sculptural concerns; however, it is primarily underpinned by my interest in contemporary painting. It questions and suggests how a painting might be conceived as a material that becomes its own support and content. The
work is painted with brightly coloured household gloss resulting in highly
seductive, smooth and dense surfaces. The colours are a reflection of
culture today, they are; artificial, fabricated colours of industrial
production that presently dominate our environment. A combination of seductive
surface and intense colour actively engages both the viewers’ sensations
and perceptions. |
