Artist
Statement:
I have recently graduated
from the University of Central England, where I studied a BA Hons. degree
in Furniture Design.
To me furniture design is about designing an object to make tasks easier
or more comfortable. The aesthetics of the piece is also important so
it can fully be appreciated, even when not in use. I consider what people
really need and how they will really use it. My designs try to solve every
day problems that occur in today's way of life, rather than simply updating
existing ideas.Forms and shapes have always been my inspiration. Organic
forms have long been a favourite, although recently 2D symmetrical shapes
have had a strong influence. Nature is a source of inspiration not only
for its forms, but also for its textures and colours. My designs rarely
consist of one material, and I like the contract between man-made and
natural materials. If asked for a preferred material, it would be a type
of wood as I enjoy working with it and its aesthetics. My choice of material
is always made to suit the design. I hope to discover new materials and
new ways of using them in the future to widen the possibilities for my
designs. I prefer for natural qualities to be shown, but if colours are
required I normally choose natural hues such as greens, browns and creams.I
would love to put 'haven' into production, but I am also looking for freelance
or permanent work.
Explanation
of chair:
Haven - for those
with small gardens or just a balcony, encouragement is needed to create
a personal space to feel relaxed in Haven is designed purely to allow
the user to relax, whether through reading or just taking time out of
the daily routine. A wide armrest is included for drinks to rest on and
the overhang of the back can be leant on offering a variety of relaxing
positions.I am at present developing this design into a complete range.
