Artist Statement:

Photography is a starting point for the images of faces that I portray in my paintings. The photographic image is the source of visual information, a snapshot, a moment in time. These images contain all manner of facial expression frozen by the camera in the momentary exposure of photographic film to light. What I then do is to improve on the photographic image by using paint to create atmosphere and a more understanding portrayal of the character under study. Each of the paintings is therefore made in an individual way that reflects the inner nature of the person. The titles of the paintings relate to the person's age, for example 'Elsie'.
