ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
One
of the greatest things about the camera is its ability to imprison a
section of time.
One of the greatest things about being an artist is being able to continue
the visual story, to work life into an otherwise raw and restricted
image. For me, photography does not provide me with the answer I am
looking for.
When you can’t capture any more realism than what is on offer,
the challenge of deciphering the genetic make up of the image becomes
mundane. The joy of capturing a face in paint is as unique as the individual.
It becomes a language that is rich in diversity, as well as technique.
Even though I graduated recently as an illustrator, I have always had
an obsessive fascination with the painterly description of the human
face, more specifically, alternative music artists.
One thing that a stage provides is the awesome feeling of presence and
atmosphere, a cocktail of anticipation and expectation. If we could
be the catalyst for this adrenaline rush, what would it be like? Everyone
has had
that dream cross his or her mind at some point. I prefer to be someone
looking from the outside in. I like re-igniting the flawless perfection
of the performer without being the provider of a performance. It could
be described as concealment within the shadows. My canvas is the camera,
and the acrylic is my photograph. In all of my work I aim to capture
depth, power, character and precision. The enjoyment I receive from
portraying my love of the flesh and synthetic surface is something I
could never obtain from standing in front of a vast sea of people. But
then again,
the enjoyment of the performance is not something that any of my subjects
could receive from a vast sea of space, where a piece of canvas and
a palette replaces the microphone and the screams of an audience…
