Artist Statment: The reason for creating this work was to make something personal to me, revealing my ‘inner’ subconscious, illustrating it as I imagine it to be. The subconscious is a deep-rooted personal presence I believe we all possess. It entails inner desires; thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams that are all entwined and linked in some way. The subconscious is breaking through our surface all the time, in dreams,imagination and emotions. I have tried to show this by almost making the core (White) to the subconscious break through the outer barriers of everyday life. (Black) I started to think about how I could make an audience feel as though they are experiencing the subconscious first hand by putting them literally ‘into’ the piece. I achieved this by accompanying the work with a sound recording. In a very monotomous, subdued voice, I read various words relating to the subconscious, such as; repressed, inner, personal, private, thoughtful, unconscious essence and many more.
