Artist Statement My name is Shanaj Khanom, Currently; I am studying for my MA in postcolonial studies. My interest in painting goes back a long way, I have been drawing and painting since I knew how to put pencil to paper. I have been painting continuously since I finished my A Level in Fine Art. I decided to keep painting as my hobby, and continue my further studies in the humanities field. I have a BA honours in Comparative Literary Studies and History and theory of Art from the University of Kent. I continued painting with the arts society on campus. I have had my work Exhibited around Kent. Two of my self portraits were selected as part of the “up coming artists of Kent”. One of my portraits was displayed in the Maidstone county hall as one of the sixty young artists in Kent. I have had one solo exhibition called “Fusion” which were a mixture of portraits at the Panoptican gallery in Kent University. I was also part of another exhibition in association with The Keynes College art work displays where 3 of my paintings were on show. I now work in a studio in association with the creative foundation with other artists. Most of my work has a hint of ethnicity, I mainly concentrate on the deeper roots of my identity, the mixture of my identity being a British/Asian/Bengali, at times I would prefer without any label at all! My recent project on cloth concentrates mainly on human emotion, possibility of healing, our space and territory and the spiritual self, which regardless of cultural identity ties us all together universally. |
