Artist Statement
"My work is dependent on color and composition. I believe the most complex emotions can be evoked from the simplest of forms. My style explores the relationship between man-made structures and the natural world; the idea of recognizable shapes and structures living within irrational thoughts and emotions. My process starts out very spontaneously, and becomes more detailed as the piece nears completion. I am most influenced by Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, and Robert Rauschenberg.”

Notes
Shawn McNulty was one of the founding members of Rosalux Gallery in 2002, which is a collective gallery in Minneapolis that has become an integral part of the art scene in Minnesota. He has been published in the Southwest Journal, Pulse Twin Cities, and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. McNulty also has original work in Bill Clinton and Jesse Ventura’s private collections, and has donated work to benefit auctions for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Person to Person, and the Humane Society of the Twin Cities.

"Shawn McNulty has perhaps the most innovative art in the show, painting in oils with an unrivaled sense of color and shape. His abstract paintings illustrate how the effective use of simple symbiotic patterns can be just as gripping as traditional portraits." - J.P. Johnson (excerpt from article in Pulse Twin Cities)
