Artist Statement: The photographs
form part of three different projects I have undertaken over the past
eighteen months. The first six images have been selected from my adorned
series. The images are concerned with the domestic English Interior, Another idea which surfaces in all my work is the British ideology towards the countyside. This is clearly evident in my study of urban interiors, the rich suburba with their country like names. Field View, Tudor Lodge, and the high rise blocks with their floral paraphernalia and ornately framed pictures of idyllic country scenes. We seem to
be aspiring to a way of life which no longer exists. In many ways the
countryside is home to much of the deprivation and poverty of some inner
city areas, and in recent years I feel many aspects of country life have
become overworked and insincere. This romanticism of the countryside inspired
me to look at the areas of Britain which are not romanticised, but those
that have retained their original character, unaffected by the monotony
of the modern world. The black and white photographs are taken at a country
car car boot sale and show a much less romantic view of this suppoisidly
idyllic rural setting. The remaining images are taken in roadside cafes,
a once established part of life on the road in Britain, however sadly these
places are dying out.
