Statement:
Images
1,2 and 3 are taken from my portfolio and relate to
a project I recently worked on which was heavily influenced
by the ballet. The traditional shapes of costumes
are beautiful, but the reality is restrictive and uncomfortable.
This inspired me to create a product which was both
attractive and comfortable and with knitwear this was
possible. As you can see from the fabric enlargement
I have incorporated support by adding boning and knitting
around it. This means that the boning is no longer
independent, but becomes part of the fabric. The
result was a supportive, yet flexible garment.
The other, more minimalistic, images come from my most recent project which explores the history of 'foundation garments' and their relevance today. I took individual components of early 20th Century foundation wear and applied them to modern, handknitted garments. The results are exiting, wearable, functional designs which would update and complement today's 'foundation garments'.
