Road Tripping
These
images were taken on a road trip around the state of California
that lasted a total of ten weeks from June to September.
Looking
at the images now, they represent to me a very difficult
experience that, if I had the chance again, I would do very
differently. I was on my own, driving in California slowly,
going out of my mind with loneliness and worrying if my
plans and my driving abilities were up to the roads around
the mountains and national parks. Even though I had planned
for three months before I left, the amount of planning I
had to do when I was there was exhausting and mind numbing.
I just remember feeling tired and warn out. When I was on
the plane to London Heathrow I was glad to be going back
home as I had seriously underestimated how much I would
crave human company.
The
photographs are taken using a specially crafted camera designed
by the Swedish camera company Hasselblad. The images are
true panoramic images that have a truly fantastic quality
when enlarged even viewed up close. The camera uses normal
35mm film and has both a panoramic and a “normal”
35mm facility. The resulting panoramic exposures are almost
the length of two normal exposures (65mm wide).
