Artist Statement At the beginning my work was concerned with ideas of medical external fixation techniques and the concept of repair and self-repair. Subsequently they became more concerned with the notion of exploded diagrams and later the fragment. The early work was developed from a kit of limited parts with full-illustrated instruction manual that could potentially be applied to repair any object. These pieces questioned the notions of mass production and the ‘made to be replaced’ and ‘no user serviceable parts’ nature of manufacture. The later series of plate pieces explore ideas of chaos, and implied form. Using spatial relationships between the fragments I aim to recreate the objects without reconstructing them. These works also make use of the plinth as a major element in the work. I am trying to break away from the conventional box format and redefine the use of plinths, using them to create a connection between parts and not for display and support. The concern with mass production is still a theme within my current and planned work. With the latest ideas I am exploring the notion of uniqueness in mass-produced forms and ideas of ‘power in numbers’.
