Artist Statement: Project: REPULSED BY THIS PLACE I AM SEDUCED BY ITS PROMISE…. NON – PLACE Media:
PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO ‘when public space becomes a derivative of movement it loses any independent experiential meaning of its own… prompting people to think of the public domain as meaningless, it is catatonic space… so familiar and so frequently used by massively escalating numbers of people as to be virtually anonymous’ Transitory public spaces, the mundane locations we pass through on an everyday basis. Removing them from their normal context of movement and isolating them through the process of photography or video forces a reconsideration, non – place is presented as place. The documentary nature of these processes is combined with digital manipulation, allowing me to present a subjective and intensified reality. The images exist somewhere between fiction and fact, forcing the viewer to question the believability and existence of these ubiquitous landscapes, and thus their meaning. Absence accentuates the ambiguity and banality of the space. Incidental marks of a person or event now passed, the only indication of what may have taken place. The surface of this vernacular landscape has become a representation of history and identity. It appears as a stage, the lack of narrative created by its emptiness encouraging the viewer to create their own. Photography and video allow me to create these spaces in a way that could not be experienced. To occupy the space, rather than to pass through it would eliminate the sense absence and anonymity, causing it to become place as opposed to non - place. Photography and video make accessible an inaccessible space.
