Artist
Statement:
My name is Gretchen Sandiford, I am a practising artist living in my local
communities of Chapeltown and Harehills. I studied and passed my Local
and National Art and Design Diplomas at the local Art College in Leeds.
I went on to develop my knowledge and skills at – Sheffield Hallam
University and gained a Fine Art B.A. Hons. This degree also included
prevailing African /African Caribbean cultural influences. I believe these
prevailing influences are about how I identify myself as British, and
African Caribbean.
As a Black woman, I often celebrate facts around African/ African Caribbean
history as it instills positive feelings of delight and value to my life
- which I invariably share with others around me.
I was told at art college by one of the tutor's, that my work relates
very closely to jazz music. I find my creativity in many different medias.
I work in textiles, painting, printing, collage, sculpture this includes
working with clay, wood carvings and metal.
In addition to working in my Art practise, Mukishi Art and Crafts, I am
currently employed as a supply teacher at various schools around Yorkshire.
