Artist
Statement:
In order to understand the cultural identity of his country, New Zealand
artist Nick McFarlane trawls through its 'alter-ego' in an attempt to
define the land which challenges and inspires its people. Drawing strength
from the ominous, McFarlane's approach is to use graphic agitation to
describe social dysfunctionalism. The work, acting as a warning, signals
the need for a greater awareness and understanding of social issues. From
hand sewn leather gang patches and unapologetic typography through to
iconic imagery, McFarlane makes a point of tearing apart the popular image
of New Zealand.
