Statement:
I have
just completed a degree in BA (Hons) Contemporary Media Practice, specialising
in photography. My major project, which 6 of the untitled series of images
on display are represented, is called Urban Inferno. It deals with how
the city and urban spaces can radiate an insecure and unnerving experience.
The background images were achieved via the use of front projection and
the coloured lighting scheme was influenced from the horror films of Italian
directors Dario Argento and Mario Bava. This added a filmic element to
my piece.
The other works on display also deal with the urban environment. I have
explored the nature of light being wasted at night, where the metropolitan
areas of London such as, Canary Wharf and Bank are usually deserted. Also,
the nature of decay on urban surfaces such as, street sign posts and brick,
concrete and wooden walls are affected. The state of the city and urban
experience seems to contain endless possibilities of exploration and there
are many avenues to go down. This aspect of the city appeals to me because
it gives me opportunities to investigate the relationship between the
citizen and the city itself.
