Emeline
Tate and Claudia Tate are sisters and artists.
They
choose words and colours rather than images, to express
their ideas. Phrases are taken from overheard conversations,
things seen, and personal experiences.
Acrylic
paint is applied in blocks to canvas, or stencilled on denim
to create words. They use an old-fashioned type-writer to
type directly on strips of canvas, which are then sewn together
with the use of a sewing machine and finally stretched on
a frame.
Emeline
says: The “Falling Out of Love” and “Genuine”
pieces are based on personal experiences with people that
I have met. The ways that the words overlap are so that
the true words and meanings are disguised. Phrases are repeated
so that the thoughts behind the painting give a lasting
impression; but the words are camouflaged so that only those
that are truly interested will take the time to read my
inner most thoughts.
Claudia
says: The “Safeguard Your…” series is
about our physical senses, and how a person’s concepts
can change on a day-to-day basis. A glass, heart, laugh,
taste, touch, mouth are each used as a metaphor to represent
a person. The words are typed in a manner that suggests
calm or frustration – depending on the gaps used between
them and whether the words run together or not; this also
controls the pace that the words are read. The following
is an extract from “Safeguard Your Glass”:
today
the glass – is full at last
today the glass – is being wanted
today the glass – is empty empty
today the glass – isbeingwatched
today the glass – is taking over
today the glass – is half full empty
today the glass – is gone forever
